Doug Wolford leaves VeriSign
Sometime during 2002, Doug Wolford apparently left
his position with VeriSign where he was a Senior Vice President and Group General Manager, Web Presence Services. (Which explains why his company e-mail addresses failed me. Hey Doug, how 'bout droppin' an ol' bud a line!?) He currently serves on the board of directors of the New Media Society of Washington, DC. His bio refers to him as "a former GM of VeriSign." In an earlier version of this bio, he was referred to as a "canal boat captain" with the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal; obviously he was serving as a volunteer "Living History Interpreter" at the C&O Canal National Historical Park during the tourist season. Hmm, nice work if ya can get it. (Source: Matt Wallace on 23 December 2002, 13:46:00 EST from the sources indicated)

Jim Wilhelm leaves East Forsyth principalship... for the second time!
From
Inside Info - May 23, 2002, the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools' employee newsletter
Copyright © 2002 Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools

End of the school year brings several administrative retirements
Jim Wilhelm is leaving again as principal at East Forsyth. He was hired by the school system in 1960 as a chemistry teacher at the former Northwest High School. He worked at the administrative center as a science coordinator from 1967 to 1972, then became an assistant principal at Reynolds. He was named the principal at the former Hanes High School in 1974, and left in 1977 to become the principal at East Forsyth. He left East Forsyth in 1990 to become assistant superintendent for high schools. He retired from that position in 1999. Patricia Gainey’s first official day as principal at East Forsyth is June 1.
(Source: Matt Wallace on Wednesday, 3 July 2002, 12:30:00 EDT from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools web site)

Please note: The first two years of Jim Wilhelm's tenure as principal corresponded with the Class of 1979's residence at East Forsyth Senior High School. The access road from West Mountain Street (That's Old U.S. 421 for us Guthrie residents opposed to Kernersville hegemony!) to the campus is named "James Wilhelm Drive" in his honor. For the past few years, he has served as East's interim principal until a permanent replacement could be hired. -- Matt Wallace, Class Webmaster

Lisa Johnson Mason reports on her cancer treatment
I would like to thank all of you who have remembered me by e-mail, cards, or in your prayers. I have heard from so many of you and I am in the process of responding to you. I just finished one phase of the chemotherapy for the breast cancer and will undergo a stem cell transplant in August followed by 6 months of chemotherapy for the colon cancer. (Each cancer has to be treated differently.) I did not realize that there are so many types of cancer. I would like to pass on some advice to all of you. Listen to what your body is trying to tell you and if you have cancer in your family (anyone, no matter how far back you need to go) please tell your family doctor so they can start certain cancer screening tests that may detect the cancer early (they do not screen for colon cancer until you are in your 50's, I was 40). You all take care and I will keep you all in my prayers too. (Source:
Lisa Johnson Mason on Sunday, 23 June 2002, 22:26:58 EDT)

Please note: In December 2001, Lisa Johnson Mason was diagnosed with both colon and breast cancer and informed the class by means of a guestbook entry on Wednesday, 15 May 2002, 23:22:47 EDT. -- Matt Wallace, Class Webmaster

Graduation anniversary greetings from the Class Webmaster
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! Damn, can you believe it's been 23 years since we sat through our seemingly interminable graduation ceremonies in the school stadium! I'd almost swear that
graduation took longer than all the intervening years! Pardon me while I go crank Alice Cooper's "School's Out"; hmm, seems I recall doing that 23 years ago... only on vinyl instead of CD. (Source: Matt Wallace on Thursday, 6 June 2002, 15:30:00 EDT)

East Forsyth Class of 1979 gets its own domain
For over two and a half years, the class web site has been hosted in a subdirectory under my personal domain, namely CompleatHeretic.com/efshs1979/. For just as long, I've wanted to put the site on a separate domain but considered it economically infeasible ($95 per year vs. no additional cost; which would you choose!). Well, my web host,
DreamHost, recently upgraded my hosting plan such that I could register a new domain and move the site onto it at no additional cost! The site's new domain is EastForsyth1979.org which is certainly less cumbersome than the previous URL. Be certain to update your Bookmarks/Favorites as appropriate. 20 Year Reunion Chairman calls for 2004 reunion volunteers
I have had conversations with a few regarding Reunion 2004. Might seem a bit early to begin, but trust me, it is not, especially to reserve large enough rooms at popular venues. There is a lot of interest in helping plan for 2004. While a formal committee has not been announced, I will act as interim coordinator and work with Matt to begin getting folks names who are interested in helping and/or leading the effort. Most importantly, everyone can help by finding our classmates, getting the word out that we plan to have a reunion in 2004, and sending them to this website to update their contact information. Please begin helping immediately and thanks in advance. I look forward to seeing all of you in 2004 and before if the opportunity presents itself! Please feel free to contact either Matt or myself to indicate whether you are interested in assisting. Our contact information is available via this site. (Source:
Mike Beshears on Thursday, 16 May 2002, 22:25:34 EDT)

Please note: Oh my, it's so very pleasant to be volunteered, but then again, I am the class webmaster, so I've already volunteered. -- Matt Wallace, Class Webmaster

New Year's greetings from the Class Webmaster
Happy New Year, classmates! Wasn't 2001 a wild ride!? I have a feeling that 2002 will be a buckin' bronc in its own right. Hmm, brings to mind that ancient Chinese curse: "May you live in interesting times." We all took a few lumps in the year past, but we're still here and on our feet. Too many of us didn't make it, but they will be remembered. For those of you wondering where the class newsletter is, I expect to send out the next issue this weekend. I heartily thank everyone who contributed to our class web site during 2001; your help is vital for maintaining a useful, interesting site. Thanks also to everyone who simply made use of the site; that's why it's here. Let us resolve to add even more to this enterprise during the coming year. Best fortunes to all in 2002! (Source:
