WALKERTOWN - Mrs. Sara Judy Scott, 76, of Walkertown, widow of John Frank Scott Jr., died Wednesday morning, Dec. 17, 2003, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Scott was born Oct. 4, 1927, in Middletown, Va., to James W. and Lucy Hannah Judy. She graduated from Shenandoah University and taught music in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools for 27 years. She was an active member of the Northside Lanes Bowling Leagues and an active member of Love's United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir and the UMW Circle. Mrs. Scott delivered Meals on Wheels in Walkertown. Surviving are two daughters, Lynne (Joe) Collins of Winston-Salem and Susan Leigh (Ben) Pai of Charlotte; a son, John "Lex" (Tammie) Scott of Cary; a stepson, Frank (Chris) Scott of DeWitt, Ark.; six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Garrett, Leanna, Wil, Keith and Catherine; two sisters, Norma Sue Roach of Jackson, Wyo., and Mary Kheuster of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and a brother, James Judy of Middletown, Va. The funeral service will be officiated at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 at Love's United Methodist Church by the Rev. James T. Webb. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at the church. They request, in lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to Love's United Methodist Church Choir Fund.

Kathy Reaves dies on 7 October 2003

Ms. Kathy Lorraine Reaves was called from Earth to rest in the arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem following a short period of illness. She was the daughter of the late Clarence T. Reaves and Lula E. Hill Reaves of Winston-Salem. Ms. Reaves was born Feb. 3, 1961, in Winston-Salem. She was a graduate of East Forsyth Senior High School, class of 1979, and Forsyth Technical College. She was a private duty nurse. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard Thomas, Archie R. Reaves Sr. and Connie J. Reaves; and a sister, Gladys Holland. The memories of Kathy's life are left to be cherished by her loving daughter, India Nakia Reaves, of the home; two loving brothers, Neal N. (Eleanor) Reaves and Levi G. (Alvonia) Hill Sr.; two sisters, Evangelist Rhonda E. (Edward) Kirk and Alline E. (Booker) Blair, all of Winston-Salem; two uncles, Lawrence (Ruth) Reaves and June (Delores) Reaves, all of Winston-Salem; an aunt, Henerietta B. Hill, of Winston-Salem; a devoted and special godsister and godbrother, Mr. James Johnson Sr. and Mrs. Vina Johnson; a devoted godnephew, James Johnson Jr., aka "Toot;" a devoted and special godson, Darryle Cuthrell; a devoted friend, Mr. Robert Anderson, all of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and devoted friends. The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Goodwill Baptist Church in Clemmons. A one-hour viewing will begin at 3 p.m. The Rev. Philemon A. Samuels will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will depart from the home, 3844 Northampton Drive, at 1:30 p.m. Professional services are implemented by Beasley's Funeral Services.

Lisa Sears Spoon's father dies on 22 October 2003

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Carl "Snook" Clinton Sears, 77, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at his residence. He was born in Yadkin County on Oct. 25, 1925, a son of the late Early Gray and Etta Davis Sears. Mr. Sears was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Navada. Mr. Sears was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of Oscar Joyner VFW Post 5352. He was a farmer and also worked for Jack Shields Grading Co. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Thurman, Billy, Davis, Elwood and Roy Sears. Surviving are his wife, Inez Wilson Sears of the home; five daughters, Wanda Sears of Greensboro, Ann Stroud of Kernersville, Debbie and Jim Bowen of Kannapolis, Nesie and Eddie Lankford and Lisa and Mark Spoon, all of Kernersville; three grandchildren, Nikki and husband Andy Boggs, Raegen Stroud and Jordan Spoon; three sisters, Bonnie Wilkins of Walnut Cove, Nina Mae Bryant of Pawley's Island and Mary Emily Cranfill of Winston-Salem; and three brothers, Dalton Sears of Clemmons and Jimmie Sears and E.V. (Honey) Sears, both of Kernersville. A funeral service will be conducted at noon Saturday, Oct. 25, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Howard Fleming and the Rev. Jim Bowen. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the sanctuary. Memorials may be directed to the Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 1018 Piney Grove Road, Kernersville, NC 27284 and to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. He will be missed by his friends and the people of the Piney Grove Community. A special thank you to his friend Ray Miller, Nan and the staff of Hospice of Winston-Salem.

Mr. Larry Danny Chandler Jr., 21, of 2115 White St. died on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003. He was born Aug. 9, 1982, in Stuttgart, Germany, to Larry Danny Chandler Sr. and Deborah Elaine Pledger Chandler. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Deltona, Fla., and a member of the youth department. He participated in football at Pine Ridge High School, Deltona, Fla. Surviving are his parents; a brother, Antwain Leon Pledger, of Winston-Salem; a son, Nehemiah Chrysiyon Chandler, of Winston-Salem; a grandmother, Lena M. Chandler, and a great-grandmother, Cordelia S. Pledger, both of Winston-Salem; five uncles and five aunts, Jacob Chandler Jr. (Debra) of Charlotte, Jerome Chandler (Vickie), Lavader McQueen, Floyd L. Chandler, Karen D. Pledger, Darryl K. Blue, Tammy D. Blue and Todd S. Blue all of Winston-Salem; a host of cousins and a multitude of friends. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21, from the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael K. Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, at the funeral home. (Russell)

EAST BEND - Mr. David Scott Owens, 42, of 3349 Smithtown Road, East Bend, husband of Sheila Cox Owens, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at his home. Mr. Owens was born in Surry County on April 9, 1961, the son of David C. Owens and the late Imogene Scott Owens. He was a member of Agape Faith Church in Clemmons and a customer-service representative for Krispy Kreme Doughnut Co. Surviving are his wife, Sheila Cox Owens of the home; a daughter, Katie Owens of the home; two stepdaughters, Meagan LaCaze of Lafayette, La., and Brittney LaCaze of the home; two sons, Nicholas Owens of the home and Ryan Owens of Walnut Cove; a stepson, Derrick LaCaze of the home; his father, David C. Owens of Winston-Salem; a sister and brother-in-law, Teresa and Eddie Choplin of Yadkinville; his grandmother, Annebelle Callahan Scott of Mount Airy; three nieces, Misty Willard and Dawn Wilkins, both of East Bend and Becky Elwood of Lexington; and a nephew, Freddy Elwood of Lexington. In addition to his mother, Mr. Owens was preceded in death by a sister, Pam Elwood; and his grandfather, Earley Scott. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by Pastor J.B. Whitfield with burial in the Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 1, at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy.

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Shirley Ann Long Beeson, 68, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Beeson was born Feb. 5, 1935, in Forsyth County, a daughter of Roy Johnson Long Sr. and Roxie Ann McGee Long. She was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church, a loving mother and wife and a "child of God." In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers. Surviving are her husband, Stanley L. "Dee" Beeson of the home; two daughters, Sandra Kay Beeson-Groce and husband Billy of Oak Ridge and Angela Darlene Beeson of Madison; two sons, Dennis Lee and wife Brenda Beeson and Larry Dean and wife Theresa Beeson, all of Kernersville; a sister, Diana Lynn Guthrie of Kernersville; two brothers, James Richard and wife Beverly Long of Tampa, Fla., and Jerry Lee and wife Sherri Long of Mooresville; and nine grandchildren. Mrs. Fannie Mae Joyce Tuttle, 88, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at the Springwood Care Center. Born in Stokes County on March 3, 1915, to Robert "Bob" and Katie Hicks Joyce, she was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church. She retired in 1975 from Carolina Narrow Fabric Co. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Junior Tuttle; a brother, Abe Joyce; and two sisters, Sadie Boles and Nellie Lewis. Mrs. Tuttle is survived by a daughter, Nannie Sue (Ray) Smith of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mattie (Robert) Rutledge of Walnut Cove and Alma Cook of Winston-Salem; a brother, Charlie Joyce of Ellerbe; two grandchildren, Karen S. Wood of Boonville and Chief Master Sgt. Kerry E. Smith of Wichita, Kan.; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Burroughs Funeral Home, with the Rev. KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Paul Curtis McCain, 40, died Friday, May 30, 2003, at his home. Mr. McCain was born Aug. 6, 1962, in Forsyth County, a son of Billy Davis and Lorraine Wallace McCain of Kernersville. He was a member of Oaklawn Baptist Church and a 1980 graduate of East Forsyth High School. He enjoyed riding and tinkering with motorcycles. He was preceded in death by a sister, Laura Elizabeth McCain. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, David and Audrey McCain of Kernersville; maternal grandparents; Paul and Mary Wallace of Franklinville; two uncles, Glendon McCain and Dave and wife Marian Wallace, all of Asheboro. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, June 2 at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home Chapel in Kernersville by the Rev. Kevin Kilbreath. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church Cemetery in Franklinville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home. In memory of Samantha: a $2.5 million gift for the study of SIDS

CHAPEL HILL -- Will and Donna Biles of Blowing Rock celebrated what would have been their daughter’s sixth birthday by making a gift to parents across the nation. They are making a $2.5 million donation to the department of pediatrics in the University of North Carolina School of Medicine for the study of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The gift was made on the Biles’ behalf by an anonymous trust in memory of their daughter, Samantha Ann Biles, a 1997 victim of SIDS.

"We have dreamed of doing something to help find out what causes SIDS ever since our daughter died," said Will Biles. "We were thrilled to learn about the research being done at UNC-Chapel Hill. It also pleased us that the research was taking place in conjunction with the opening of the new North Carolina Children’s Hospital, the only hospital in the state that treats children regardless of their ability to pay."

SIDS is the sudden death of an apparently healthy infant whose death remains unexplained after a postmortem investigation. It is the leading cause of death in infants between 1 month and 1 year of age. Samantha Biles was four months old when she died.

"SIDS has been associated with problems of the heart, lungs, infections, sleeping positions and abnormalities but the underlying cause is not known," said Dr. Alan Stiles, chair of the department of pediatrics. "This gift is exciting for the faculty because it will help establish a new research group that builds on our strengths in cardiac, pulmonary and brain development research. This work could eventually lead to prevention of these tragic losses for families."

Income from $1.5 million of the endowment will create the Samantha Ann Biles Distinguished Professorship, used to attract or retain a SIDS physician-scholar in the department of pediatrics. The university will apply for $334,000 in state matching funds from the Distinguished Professors Endowment Trust Fund to supplement the professorship. Income from the endowment’s remaining $1 million will create the Samantha Ann Biles Fund for SIDS Research to support the work of faculty and to bring visiting SIDS scholars to campus.

"Research made possible by this generous gift has the potential to directly impact children and families in North Carolina and across the nation," said Dr. Jeffrey L. Houpt, dean of the UNC School of Medicine. "It establishes a new area of research that draws on the strengths of scientists and clinicians already at work at one of the nation’s leading schools for health related research."

Biles’ gift counts toward the Carolina First campaign goal of $1.8 billion. Carolina First is a comprehensive, multi-year private fund-raising campaign to support Carolina’s vision of becoming the nation’s leading public university.

Daniel Dean Dyson dies

Daniel "Dan" Dean Dyson, 42, of Winston-Salem, passed from this life recently into his Heavenly Home. Now he is with Jesus in a place where no sorrow or sickness will ever be. He was born Dec. 24, 1960, in Guilford County. He was the beloved son of Margaret and Donald Dyson of Kernersville. He served three years in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he received his G.E.D. He was a very skilled auto mechanic and worked at B&C Motors, where his patrons highly respected and loved him. He took several courses at Forsyth Tech to enable him to work on computerized cars. His dad says, "Dan knew more about repairing cars than anyone I know." Dan attended First Assembly Church of Winston-Salem. He is our cherished son, and we will miss him very much. Besides his loving parents, he is survived by his two beautiful daughters, Heather Joy Dyson and Melissa Dyson Rothrock and husband, Andy Rothrock, and their mother, Rene Dyson; two beautiful granddaughters, "Katie" Marie Rothrock and Emily Leanne Rothrock, all of Winston-Salem; his special brother, David D. Dyson of Kernersville; three uncles; two dear aunts; many wonderful cousins; and two special friends who were like brothers to him, Jimmy Walker and Mark Hill. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Kerwin Baptist Church in Kernersville, with the Rev. Joe Myers and the Rev. Tom Wagoner officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, May 26, at Pierce Chapel in Kernersville, and at other times at the home of his parents, 413 Vance St., Kernersville. Burial will be at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory in Kernersville. Memorials to the Daniel D. Dyson Lupus Memorial Fund, in his memory and in honor of his mother, Margaret R. Dyson, may be made to the Lupus Foundation, 2841 Foxwood Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Mitzi Culler Jahn's father dies on 26 April 2003

Mr. Richard "Dick" Delano Culler, 69, of Winston-Salem died Saturday morning, April 26, 2003, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Sept. 22, 1933, in Forsyth County to Robert W. and Luttia Reich Culler. Mr. Culler graduated from John W. Hanes High School, class of 1951, and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Wesley Asbury Sunday school class. Mr. Culler was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ellen Bowles; and a brother, Agnew Culler. Surviving are his wife, Mary Nelson Culler of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Mitzi and William Jahn of Leavenworth, Kan.; a son and daughter-in-law, Rich and Angela Culler of Kernersville; four grandchildren, Zac, Brean, Bryant and Dalton; five sisters, all of Winston-Salem, Bernice Scales, Imogene Marion and husband, Wendell, Faye Dowell and husband, Sam, Peggy Short and Shelby Thomas; a special niece, Sue Hensley of Tampa, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Norma Culler; also his mother-in-law, Pansy Wall. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, in Trinity United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Lee Strange and the Rev. Ervin Hauser. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. Mr. Culler will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund, 3819 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104. The family sends a special "thank you" to Dr. Tom Hinson, Dr. Bruce Brasher and the 8th floor staff at Forsyth Medical Center.

Principal Wilhelm's father dies at age 100 on 24 April 2003

EAST BEND - Mr. James Roy Wilhelm, 100, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2003, at the Sticht Center at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Feb. 28, 1903, in Yadkin County, to Philip Luther and Florence Allen Wilhelm. Mr. Wilhelm farmed his entire life in addition to working at Dixie and Growers tobacco warehouses. He served Yadkin County as a deputy sheriff for 20 years. He was a member of East Bend Baptist Church. He was happily married to his wife, Mamie Perry Wilhelm for 77 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Marler Wilhelm; his wife, Mamie Perry Wilhelm; and a son, Perry L. Wilhelm. Surviving are two daughters, Lou Ray (Gray) Etchison of Clemmons and Nell (Athalee) Dinkins of East Bend; a son, Jim (Florence) Wilhelm of Kernersville; a half sister, Mrs. Lucille Moir of Virginia Beach, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. today, April 26, 2003, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by the Rev. Jim Cohn. Burial will follow in the East Bend Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the East Bend Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Dorothy Potter, 501 Fairground Road, East Bend, NC 27018 or to the East Bend Public Library Building Fund, c/o Donna Love, 5944 Donnaha Park Road, East Bend, NC 27018. The family would like to express their appreciation for the splendid care of Mr. Wilhelm while at the Yadkin Nursing Care Center.

Skipper Westmoreland's mother, Mike Beshears's stepmother dies on 14 April 2003
Shirley Jarvis Westmoreland Beshears, mother of Skipper Westmoreland and Wendy Westmoreland (East Forsyth '80), stepmother of Mike Beshears and Mark Beshears (East Forsyth '80), died on 14 April 2003 due to complications during surgery.

Mrs. Shirley Ann Jarvis Beshears, 65, of Winston-Salem passed away Monday, April 14, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Oct. 25, 1937, in Mars Hill to Robert Glenn and Carrie Riddle Jarvis. Mrs. Beshears was of the Baptist faith. In her high school years she was an accomplished musician, playing the drums, winning numerous state championships, and was one of the youngest performers ever in the Winston-Salem Symphony. She also attended Guilford College. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 20 years of service with one of her duties as visitors tour guide. Shirley loved children and spent most of her adult life teaching baton and dance routines to young ladies. Her teams participated in many national championships. She was past matron of the Eastern Star and was very active in the PTA and scouting in her younger years. She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Calvin Taylor Westmoreland Jr. Surviving are a daughter, Wendy Lynne Westmoreland of Panorama City, Calif.; a sister, June Jarvis Clore of Winston-Salem; a very special niece, Linda Johnson of Winston-Salem; numerous loving friends; and a very special companion, "Miss Mousie." The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.

Please note: Calvin Taylor (Skipper, Skip) Westmoreland, Jr. and Wendy Lynne Westmoreland are my fifth cousins once removed by our common descent from my g-g-g-g-g-grandparents, their g-g-g-g-grandparents, Alexander Westmoreland and Anne Nipper, assuming I've gotten the genealogy right. New Year's greetings from the Class Webmaster
Happy New Year, classmates! While 2002 wasn't the kick in the stomach that was 2001, it certainly had it's moments. Even so, I have a feeling that 2002 will go down as the lull before the storm of 2003. My gut tells me that we will resume our war with Iraq in the next month or two, and North Korea may very well follow later in the year. Please keep the men and women of our armed forces, my brothers and sisters, in your thoughts. Never forget that we're free to indulge our "Glory Days" and whatever else because of their sacrifices.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to our class web site during 2002 whether you added information or simply kept your contact info updated. Your assistance greatly aids me in the fulfillment of my duties as Class Webmaster. Thanks also to everyone who simply made use of the site; I hope you were able to locate an old friend or to find something useful. As 2003 is the preparation year for our silver reunion in 2004, I hope you'll continue to do your part by finding our lost classmates or volunteering for the reunion committee. Best fortunes to all in 2003!
